In the bustling maritime hub of Singapore, Priboy Shipping has been a trusted provider of halal provisions to ships anchored in its waters. Founded by Muhammad Yusuf, the company has built a reputation for reliability and quality. In 2017, his daughter Farzana Begum inherited the family business, bringing with her a vision to honor her father's legacy while steering the company into the future.
Despite its strong reputation, Priboy Shipping was grappling with inefficiencies that hindered growth and customer satisfaction.
Farzana observed that orders were received through various channels—emails, messages, and WhatsApp—and manually entered into Excel sheets. This process was time-consuming and prone to errors.
“When I first took over in 2017, our business model was mainly manual. We would get orders from ship captains via messages, emails, or even WhatsApp. So we had to manually key in the prices in the Excel sheet, and that takes a long time. Errors bound to happen quite frequently because of typo errors—like sometimes one decimal point can change the whole price, you see.”

The lack of a real-time inventory system led to stock shortages and last-minute scrambles to fulfill orders.
“After the ship captain finalized the order, that's when my operations staff would go through the warehouse to start picking up all the items for packing and palletizing. And then that's where we have a lot of issues when, you know, suddenly we do not have the stocks on hand.”

To meet urgent demands, the company often resorted to purchasing items from retail outlets at higher prices.
“At the back end, we would try to check with suppliers whether they can make it on time to deliver some stocks, or else we might need to rush out to the nearest supermarket and grab things off the shelves. Each product that is out of stock, if you have to buy it off the rack at supermarkets, can easily cost at least 10 to 15 percent more. With that cost, it can sometimes go up to hundreds or even thousands of dollars.”

Determined to modernize the business, Farzana took matters into her own hands and built an e-commerce website on Shopify.
While the e-commerce platform allowed for online ordering and automated inventory deductions, many clients were hesitant to adopt it.
“We still have ship owners or captains that actually send us orders via Excel sheets. So for that, my staff have to create another invoice on another system, and the inventory for that particular order will not be captured on the e-commerce platform.”
